Magic and laughs will be in the air at RiverStage’s next production, Puffs by Matt Cox!  This long-running Off-Broadway comedy is appropriate for all ages and satirizes the book and film series about a certain Boy Wizard at a School of Magic, but from the perspective of the minor characters.  Performances will be at Greenspace Center, 815 Market Street, Lewisburg on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm on November 3, 4, 10, and 11, and two Sunday matinees at 2:30pm on November 5 and 12.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students/children, with general admission seating, and they can be purchased at the door or here on our website

Puffs by Matt Cox (subtitled “Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic”) is the hilarious parody that covers all the events of the popular 7-book and film series about a certain Wizard School in one fast-paced, laugh-out-loud show, appropriate for all ages.  The show takes a fresh look at three minor characters from that series—Wayne, Oliver, and Megan—and tells a parallel story, following their misadventures as they just try to survive 7 years of magic school.  Their housemates—known as the ‘Puffs’—are a group of well-meaning, loyal rejects who love badgers, and they reimagine what heroes can really be as they provide comic relief throughout the epic story.  This award-winning show premiered Off-Broadway in 2016 and ran for over 600 performances before becoming available to local theatres, and has been described as “a tale for anyone has never been destined to save the world.”

“It’s so much fun to tell a story like this,” said director Sara Jones, “with so many moving parts.  The cast is hilarious, and they have risen to the challenge of things like quick costume changes between multiple characters and multiple voices.  Our props designer has manged to find or craft over 100 props for the show, and there are over 600 sound effects and music cues.  For the audience, if you’re a fan of the certain Boy Wizard series, you are really going to love all of the references making fun of the original series, but even if you are not that familiar with these books or films, it is also a great, thoughful comedy about what it is like to feel like you are a secondary character in someone else’s story.”  RiverStage president Jove Graham added, “Our version of this show is appropriate for ‘young wizards’ as well as adults, so we know it’s going to be a really funny show and hope everyone will hop on the train and come join us for magic school!”

The cast features 11 comedic actors, most of whom play one of the ‘Puffs’ but also fill multiple roles in the huge cast of characters from the 7-year saga.  This cast includes several new faces to RiverStage and many who have been featured in plays and musicals across the region.  The main trio of Wayne Hopkins, Oliver Rivers, and Megan Jones are played by Aditi Shruti, Justin Moore, and Katherine Leister, while the story is orchestrated by the Narrator played by Lindsey Sauer.  The rest of the cast includes Kate Shaw (Leanne), Wendy Durant (Susie Bones), Desirae Moore (Hannah), Jove Graham (J. Finch), Caitlin Meleski (Sally Perks), Ian Harris (Ernie Mac), and Katelyn Loss (Cedric and Mr. Voldy).  The show is directed by Jones, with costumes by Anne Griffin, props by Ashley Jackson, lighting by Cole Casimir, set by Dennis Merkle and Jove Graham, original music by Brian Metolius, sound design by Matthew Cox, and stage management by Tom Simpson.
